You Don¡¯t Have To Be Old To Be Wise...
¡°I grow sick and tired of the same old lies
Might look a little young
So what¡¯s wrong
You don¡¯t have to be old to be wise...¡±
In the heavy metal guitar music genre, Judas Priest is one of the best, a legendary founding element.
¡®You Don¡¯t Have To Be Old To Be Wise¡¯ is the 6th track on the original vinyl and remastered CD ¡®Brit-
ish Steel¡¯, the 6th album by the British band, released on 14 April 1980. The song starts out, ¡°I¡¯ve had
enough of being programmed, And told what I ought to do; Let¡¯s get one thing straight, I¡¯ll choose my
fate, And it¡¯s got nothing to do with you.¡± This one lyric resonates to the free soul. It resonates across
our country in these times, 34 years later. The good news of the song, that cuts to the heart, is that one
can ¡°have enough¡±. One can ¡°choose their own fate¡±, and can stop being programmed, with a little
wisdom. Someone wise once said, ¡°In seeking wisdom, the first step is silence, the second is listening...¡±
Do you truly ever stop all noise, all thought and listen? Listen to what is being told to you? Do you listen
to what is being mind numbingly repeated on TV, in movies, in many songs, in all the major media, over
and over and over? If you do, you will hear (and see) negative and destructive programming throughout
it all. Wisdom is recognizing when someone or something wants to control your behavior, and seeing
their methods. Do you ever listen to that quiet whisper in your ear saying, ¡°This can¡¯t be right¡±? Do you
think that maybe turning off the ¡®programming¡¯ might help? Do you listen to nature and the great Spirit
when they talk to you on the winds or in the bird¡¯s song? Or when knowledge and experience is poured
out for you, to confirm what is true and life giving, and what is false and dangerous? Do you listen? Do
you? Do you listen to your body when it says, ¡°hey, what the heck are you doing to me?¡± Sooner or later
you will. Trust us. Wisdom is 80% listening and 20% moving forward with what you know. If someone
continuously says for you to drink poison and your acquired knowledge has taught you that that is not a
good idea, it would be wise not to listen to them anymore. Wisdom is understanding that ¡°I got a will of
my own¡±, as the song says, and that I can, and should, act in my best interest. Best of all, you don¡¯t have
to be old to understand that, and to ¡°want to taste what it¡¯s like to be free¡±. You don¡¯t have to be old to
be wise. Right now, however old you are, you are free to see, and to listen, and to free yourself from the
influences of negative forces. Really, you don¡¯t have to wait. You don¡¯t have to be old to be wise.

The silverhawk feather that graces our front page was chosen for it¡¯s significant spiritual
symbolism. Hawks are symbols of spirit, wisdom and power. The hawk is the messenger. It is
also about visionary power and guardianship, the hawk is very protective of the young in its
nest. It teaches us about providing for family and self. Hawk teaches us to be observant and to
pay attention to what we may overlook. This could mean a talent we don¡¯t use, a blessing for
which we haven¡¯t expressed gratitude, or a message from Spirit. The hawk has keen eyesight, it
is about opening our eyes and seeing that which is there to guide us. Hawk is also about new
beginnings and always moving forward along the correct path.
