Area sites serving free summer meals
to Colorado kids & teens; Statewide
collaborative effort ensures fewer kids
go hungry this Summer
Denver, June 17, 2014: Summer should be a
fun and enriching time for all Colorado children,
but for many it represents a time when they
are at the greatest risk of hunger due to lost
access to school meals. A collaborative effort of
government agencies, nonprofit and commu-
nity-based organizations, and school districts
focuses on addressing child hunger through a
statewide summer food program. This summer,
more than 500 community sites across Colorado
will provide meals to children up to 18 years old
at no cost.
The Summer Food Service Program, funded by
the USDA, was established to serve as a nutri-
tional safeguard for children when school is not
session. It is administered by the Colorado De-
partment of Education and supported by Hun-
ger Free Colorado, with hundreds of Colorado
organizations providing meals in their communi-
ties and neighborhoods. Sites such as churches,
schools and recreation centers offer free, nutri-
tious breakfasts, lunches and/or suppers that
meet federal nutrition guidelines, as well as fun,
engaging activities for children. There are no
income or registration requirements for partici-

needed for healthy lives, so they can thrive in
and out of school,¡± said Kathy Underhill, execu-
tive director for Hunger Free Colorado, the
state¡¯s leading anti-hunger advocacy organiza-
tion. ¡°It¡¯s estimated one in five Colorado kids
experience hunger, but programs like this one
serve to ensure fewer kids go hungry. It fills a
nutritional gap and helps families stretch their
food budgets farther.¡±
Last year more than 1.34 million summer meals
were served to Colorado kids and teens, almost
double compared to summer 2009.

Brews & Bogeys Now Open
Newly Renovated Restaurant
at Black Canyon Golf Course
The City of Montrose and Horsefly Brewing Com-
pany are pleased to announce the opening of the
newly renovated restaurant at the Black Canyon
Golf Course, Brews and Bogeys.
The City of Montrose began operating the Black
Canyon Golf Course (BCGC) in early 2014 and
immediately began constructing improvements to
the course and BCGC facilities. The refurbished
restaurant represents the most dramatic of these
On June 11th, Brews and Bogeys began serving
cool refreshments and tasty treats and is open
seven days a week. The menu includes a variety
of appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, wings, sal-
ads, and a full bar to compliment the great food.
BCGC is a municipal golf course open to all, and
Brews and Bogeys has something for everyone.
The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor
patio dining. Views from the patio are spectacu-
lar, and indoor diners are entertained by several
large screen televisions continuously broadcast-
ing various sporting events. The venue is also
available for luncheons, meetings, special events,
parties, and catering.

Palisade Lavender Festival
Come to the 4th Annual Lavender Festival,
July 11-13, Colorado¡¯s only lavender festival in
historic downtown Palisade. Located in Western
Colorado along the I-70 corridor, getting here is
a quick 4-hour drive or 1-hour flight from Denver
or Salt Lake City.

The Friday motor coach tours to lavender farms
in the North Fork Valley as well as the Palisade

(BPT): This time of year is about warm weather,
vacations and relaxing afternoons. It also her-
alds the return of farmers markets. A trip to the
market is a great opportunity to indulge in fresh
healthy produce and to expand your horizons by
trying new items or preparing them in different

to the local farmers market:
* Note the hours and dates of your local market
on your calendar. Set reminders on your smart-
phone that will alert you when favorite items
such as tomatoes, peas, beans and strawberries
come into season.
* Prepare your refrigerator and kitchen for the

drawer, and stock up on items that complement
