Ain¡¯t Life Grand
Sun came out the other day
Through those dusty clouds
And in my mind I was a child
And it felt good!
Ain¡¯t Life Grand is a very cool song from the popular band Widespread Panic. What makes this song so grand?
Well, apart from the tight, upbeat, danceable yet ethereal, piano heavy, almost bluegrassy music, that seems to
pull you effortlessly into it¡¯s magical, feel good rhythm, it tells the universal story of negativity turned positive by
an act of love. Here is this guy, he¡¯s lost, maybe bitter, judgemental, looking at others saying ¡°What you knowin?¡±
As he spends his money at the liqour store, sarcastically thinking ¡°Ain¡¯t life grand.¡± Even ¡°My wife¡¯s got the blues¡±
and ¡°Now I¡¯ve got them¡± too. Indeed, negativity spreads like cancer amongst us if we let it. But what happens in
the song that changes everything and makes the ¡°sun come out¡±? He did something positive in the face of it all
and brought his wife a kiss, which magically made ¡°those blues run¡± away. Then his mind cleared from the dusty
clouds(of alcohol?) and he felt rejuvenated, with a fresh mind like a child. ¡°And it felt GOOD!¡± One simple kiss of
love changed everything, even the music gets livelier and happier. It¡¯s no wonder then, that the song makes you
want to dance. Ain¡¯t life grand?

The silverhawk feather that graces our front page was chosen for it¡¯s significant spiritual
symbolism. Hawks are symbols of spirit, wisdom and power. The hawk is the messenger.
It is also about visionary power and guardianship, the hawk is very protective of the young
in its nest. It teaches us about providing for family and self. Hawk teaches us to be obser-
vant and to pay attention to what we may overlook. This could mean a talent we don¡¯t use,
a blessing for which we haven¡¯t expressed gratitude, or a message from Spirit. The hawk
has keen eyesight, it is about opening our eyes and seeing that which is there to guide us.
Hawk is also about new beginnings and always moving forward along the correct path.
