Fishing
The strong beliefs
like ideas come to life;
Turn atoms into rain and stone,
the sands and tall trees
Fishing is an amazing song by the band Widespread Panic. Filled with a haunting melody, beauti-
ful guitar work and a unique, almost surreal ambiance it is easy to get lost in the music. How-
ever, when you combine the powerful lyrics that sing about inspiration, to the emotion inducing
sounds that the band has created, then the song could be considered a master work with an
important message.
Inspiration in the song is represented by Maia, the goddess of spring, birth and beginnings.
Described as an ¡°illusion of light, she dances¡± and ¡°she barely waits a moment¡± to spark an
idea. ¡°Words walk by¡±, we ¡°stop and talk about it¡±, ¡°we see fishes, we go fishing¡±. Always fish-
ing. Our ¡°thoughts meander¡±, ¡°rise and fall¡± as we talk about them and develop ¡°strong beliefs¡±,
which then ¡°come to life¡±. Maia, she dances, birthing thoughts which grow to beliefs. Maia, she
dances, and our beliefs then ¡°turn atoms into rain and stone, sands and tall trees¡±, creating
¡°deep romance and poetry¡±. Yet there¡¯s a warning as well, all ¡°too easy to see¡±, that when we¡¯re
self absorbed, like Narcissus, we can create ¡°songs of ruin¡±. Like those of ¡°Gurdjieff and Adi Da¡±,
whose narcissism led to a belief that they were God and to eventual ruin and disgrace. Inspira-
tion, as the song says, is like an elevator door opening. Depending on whether you are selfless or
selfish determines whether it goes up or down. Inspiration, she dances in the light. We should do
likewise, the song suggests at the end, and ¡°dance in the light¡±.

The silverhawk feather that graces our front page was chosen for it¡¯s significant spiritual
symbolism. Hawks are symbols of spirit, wisdom and power. The hawk is the messenger.
It is also about visionary power and guardianship, the hawk is very protective of the young
in its nest. It teaches us about providing for family and self. Hawk teaches us to be obser-
vant and to pay attention to what we may overlook. This could mean a talent we don¡¯t use,
a blessing for which we haven¡¯t expressed gratitude, or a message from Spirit. The hawk
has keen eyesight, it is about opening our eyes and seeing that which is there to guide us.
Hawk is also about new beginnings and always moving forward along the correct path.
