Uplifting The Western Slope
Pg 2 - The Sunshine Express
¡°One of these mornings
You¡¯re going to rise up singing
Then you¡¯ll spread your wings
And you¡¯ll take to the sky¡±
Oh it¡¯s Summertime, and the living is easy... ¡°Summertime¡± is an aria composed in 1934 by George
Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, the author of the
novel Porgy on which the opera was based, although the song is also co-credited to Ira Gershwin by
ASCAP. The song soon became a popular and much recorded jazz standard and has been described
as ¡°without doubt one of the finest songs the composer ever wrote¡±. Composer and lyricist Stephen
Sondheim has characterized Heyward¡¯s lyrics for ¡°Summertime¡± as ¡°the best lyrics in the musical
theater¡±. The song is recognized as one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded mu-
sic, with more than 33,000 covers by groups and solo performers. Impressive. It is a soft, melodic,
almost hypnotizing tune, with a whimsical, laid back and comforting feel to it. It so successfully cap-
tures that lazy days of Summer feeling, that so many musical artists over the years have attempted
to do, that it is no wonder that it is such a classic still much loved many, many years later. It is no
wonder that we received several emails this month where the authors of those emails sang it to us.
Such fun. It quickly became the obvious choice as THE song for the June/July edition. The song is
one of comfort and assurance, a lullaby sung to a baby, acknowledging that someday, this baby will
fly, and to let them know that, until ¡°that morning, there¡¯s a¡¯nothing can harm you, with daddy and
mamma standing by¡±. A very comforting song indeed. Enjoyable to sing and absolutely perfect for
these days when ¡°Fish are jumpin¡¯ and the cotton is high¡±.

The silverhawk feather that graces our front page was chosen for it¡¯s significant spiritual
symbolism. Hawks are symbols of spirit, wisdom and power. The hawk is the messenger.
It is also about visionary power and guardianship, the hawk is very protective of the young
in its nest. It teaches us about providing for family and self. Hawk teaches us to be obser-
vant and to pay attention to what we may overlook. This could mean a talent we don¡¯t use,
a blessing for which we haven¡¯t expressed gratitude, or a message from Spirit. The hawk
has keen eyesight, it is about opening our eyes and seeing that which is there to guide us.
Hawk is also about new beginnings and always moving forward along the correct path.
