Kind & Generous
¡°You¡¯ve been so kind and generous
I don¡¯t know how you keep on giving
for your kindness I¡¯m in debt to you
for your selflessness, my admiration
and for everything you¡¯ve done
You know I¡¯m bound...
I¡¯m bound to thank you for it¡±
Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and
musician. She joined the alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 and left it to be-
gin her solo career in 1993. Her song ¡®Kind & Generous¡¯, from the 1998 album ¡®Ophelia¡¯, is
the perfect Thanksgiving song, one of the best. Why? Because it gives thanks heartily and
¡°I want to thank you for so many gifts you gave with love and tenderness, I want to thank
you,¡± goes the song and continues, ¡°I want to thank you for your generosity, the love and
the honesty that you gave me... I want to thank you.¡± All sung to a contemporary, lively
and uplifting melodic arrangement that gives one the feeling of the joy that comes with
giving thanks.
Of course singing along the thanks has it¡¯s effect. Most importantly, while this song can be
sung to give thanks to anyone who¡¯s been kind, this song also gives thanks to the right be-
ing, the one that so rightly deserves ALL of the thanks, all of the time, not just at Thanks-
giving. The creator God almighty, our Father who gives us all things to begin with. Our very
breath and spirit! Thank you! - KD

The silverhawk feather that graces our front page was chosen for it¡¯s significant spiritual
symbolism. Hawks are symbols of spirit, wisdom and power. The hawk is the messenger.
It is also about visionary power and guardianship, the hawk is very protective of the young
in its nest. It teaches us about providing for family and self. Hawk teaches us to be obser-
vant and to pay attention to what we may overlook. This could mean a talent we don¡¯t use,
a blessing for which we haven¡¯t expressed gratitude, or a message from Spirit. The hawk
has keen eyesight, it is about opening our eyes and seeing that which is there to guide us.
Hawk is also about new beginnings and always moving forward along the correct path.
