You¡¯ve got a friend
¡°If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you¡¯ll hear me knocking at your door¡±
¡®You¡¯ve Got a Friend¡¯ is a song originally written and performed by Carole King. It was
included in her album Tapestry of 1971, but was made famous by James Taylor¡¯s cover
version the same year. Taylor¡¯s version came out as a single in April of 1971, and became a
huge hit, going all the way to #1 in the US by July, and hitting #4 in the UK. When Tapes-
try was first released, Taylor was a much bigger star than King, and in the spring of 1971,
they toured together with King opening for Taylor. The song was never a hit for King, since
she didn¡¯t release it as a single (James Taylor got there first), but the album was a smash,
spending 15 weeks at #1 in the US and 302 weeks (that¡¯s 6 years!) on the charts, making
it the longest charting album by any female solo artist.
Tapestry, some would say, is the closest thing to a perfect album. ¡®You¡¯ve Got a Friend¡¯
plays a large part in making it so. There are very few things in life that we need as much
as a friend. ¡°When you¡¯re down and troubled and you need some love and care¡±, it is very
comforting to know that ¡°all you have to do is call¡±, and a friend will be there. We are
blessed in our lives to have friends that come and go, to share our joys and sorrows, to
laugh and cry with us. This is a big reason why this song touches our souls. But there¡¯s
another reason. Carole King said the song ¡°was as close to pure inspiration as I¡¯ve ever
experienced. The song wrote itself. It was written by something outside of myself, through
me.¡± I believe it. It sounds as if it was written (through King) to all of us, from the great-
est friend of all, the one who laid his life down for us, and the reason we celebrate Easter.
Jesus. It is written, ¡°Greater love than this hath no man, when any man bestoweth his life
for his friends.¡± ¡®You¡¯ve Got a Friend¡¯ reminds us that, indeed, we do have a friend, and no
matter what, ¡°Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, all you have to do is call.¡± And He¡¯ll be there.
You¡¯ve got a friend. Ain¡¯t it good to know...

The silverhawk feather that graces our front page was chosen for it¡¯s significant spiritual
symbolism. Hawks are symbols of spirit, wisdom and power. The hawk is the messenger.
It is also about visionary power and guardianship, the hawk is very protective of the young
in its nest. It teaches us about providing for family and self. Hawk teaches us to be obser-
vant and to pay attention to what we may overlook. This could mean a talent we don¡¯t use,
a blessing for which we haven¡¯t expressed gratitude, or a message from Spirit. The hawk
has keen eyesight, it is about opening our eyes and seeing that which is there to guide us.
Hawk is also about new beginnings and always moving forward along the correct path.
