Turn To Stone
¡°And you know it¡¯s gettin¡¯ stronger
It can¡¯t last very much longer
Turn to stone...¡±
It is thought by more than a few people that
Joe Walsh wrote this song in response to the
Kent State shootings in the last century. That
is a good possibility. But what exactly did he
mean by ¡®Turn to stone¡¯? Let me guess. The
followers of God are described as the ¡°living
stones¡± of the eternal spiritual house that God
is building. If this be the case, then Joe¡¯s call
to ¡®turn to stone¡¯ makes perfect sense within
the context of the whole song. A living stone is
to be a declarer of truth and love and light,
both by our words and by the life we live before
others in the world. Kent State and other
horrors inflicted upon each other do not fit that.
The fighting between brothers, the lies, the
burning of principles, it cannot last much longer.
The writing is on the wall. There IS a change in
the wind and the signs don¡¯t lie. It is time to
turn to stone.

The silverhawk feather that graces our front page was chosen for it¡¯s significant spiritual
symbolism. Hawks are symbols of spirit, wisdom and power. The hawk is the messenger.
It is also about visionary power and guardianship, the hawk is very protective of the young
in its nest. It teaches us about providing for family and self. Hawk teaches us to be obser-
vant and to pay attention to what we may overlook. This could mean a talent we don¡¯t use,
a blessing for which we haven¡¯t expressed gratitude, or a message from Spirit. The hawk
has keen eyesight, it is about opening our eyes and seeing that which is there to guide us.
Hawk is also about new beginnings and always moving forward along the correct path.
